Packing list: Cabin trip

Tips

• A sleeping-bag liner weighs 200–400 g and costs NOK 300–500 — one of the items first-time users most often forget. At DNT cabins you sleep under wool blankets and duvets, but never directly against them. A liner is the grown-up solution.
• The DNT key is a single key for the whole of Norway. It is ordered from DNT (NOK 200 deposit) and fits every self-service and unstaffed cabin. Without it, you sleep outside. Check that it is in your rucksack before you set off.
• A self-service cabin has a provisions box with pasta, tinned food, dry rations and coffee — you use it and pay through the self-service system. Even so, bring emergency rations for one extra day.
• An unstaffed cabin has no food. Pack as if it were a camping trip, just without the tent. Consider the camping trip list if you are unsure.
• Indoor shoes or slippers are welcome when you arrive. At a staffed cabin it is customary to take off your boots at the entrance.
• A light insulated jacket for the evenings indoors — the cabins warm up slowly once the wood stove is lit.
• DNT membership often pays for itself after two or three nights at a self-service cabin. NOK 800–900 a year (2024).
