Foam mat
A robust and inexpensive sleeping mat that takes a lot. The obvious choice if you only want one mat — but it can be combined with others on cold trips.
If you are only going to have one sleeping mat, this is the type to have. Foam mats take a lot, are inexpensive and easy to clean. They come in different versions — both completely flat and with shapes that give more insulating capacity.
The advantage is that they cannot puncture, and they withstand a fair amount of wear without losing insulating capacity. They work well in all conditions, but can be a bit on the thin side once it turns cold — in which case you should combine several.
