Tags: Algae Description: The tiny algae that float in the water are called phytoplankton. There are many different kinds of phytoplankton, but what they have in common is that they usually consist of only one or a few cells, and you therefore need a microscope to be able to see them. These algae serve as food for fish and other small creatures. They drift around with the currents in the water and have developed various ways of keeping themselves at the top of the water where there is enough light for photosynthesis. Some have outgrowths that work as little wings, others have air bladders that work as a ‘float belt’, and some of them have small hairs that they can swim with.
