Red clover

Tags: Flowers Description: Red clover is one of many clover species in Norway. The red flowers sit many together in heads, and the leaves are characteristically three-lobed. Sometimes you may be lucky enough to find four-lobed leaves, and these are said to bring luck. Red clover has been known in Norway as a cultivated plant right back from the 1700s and is one of the most important fodder crops. All the clover species belong to a family called the pea flowers. They live in association with micro-organisms in their root nodules. The micro-organisms supply nitrogen to the plants by taking it up directly from the air, something no plant can do on its own. In this way the clover plants add nitrogen to the soil that other plants can take up afterwards. That is why it is good to alternate between growing clover and other crops. Use: In folk medicine, an extract of red clover has been used against coughs. The flower heads can be eaten and taste slightly sweet.
