Tourist cabin

Map symbol for a tourist cabin: red marks the degree of service. Fully red = staffed, half red = food store, red square with white fill = no-service without food.

Tourist cabins are marked in red on the map. The colour tells you whether the cabin is staffed or not:

  • Fully red — staffed lodge with food and staff. Like a hotel, but often to a somewhat lower standard (outdoor toilet, four-bed rooms).
  • Half red — self-service cabin with a food store. You help yourself and pay according to the price list.
  • Red square with white fill — no-service cabin without food. You have a stove, a roof over your head, a toilet and beds.

On Norwegian hiking maps, it is the cabin system of the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) that dominates. Check opening times and booking on ut.no before your trip.
