Wide forest skis (jaktski)
A wide, stiff ski with a deep sidecut — the carrying qualities taken to the extreme. Best for heavy loads and deep loose snow, but less flexible than fjellski.
Wide forest skis (jaktski) take the carrying qualities of backcountry cross-country skis (fjellski) to the extreme. They are wider and stiffer than fjellski, and usually have a deep sidecut — best for situations where extreme carrying in loose snow is critical, and where the trip is on the shorter side.
When is it suitable?
- Hunting trips where you have to carry a felled animal or heavy gear
- Areas with a great deal of deep, loose snow
- Short trips where carrying matters more than speed
- When you travel off paths and trails in dense forest
When is it a poor choice?
On long trips on the vidde (mountain plateau), where light, nimble skis are better — there, most people choose fjellski. Wide forest skis are heavier to travel with over distance.
