Reproofing the coating on a tent floor

Tent floor during coating reproofing.

When the tent floor starts to soak up moisture, the waterproof treatment has worn through. Here is how to apply a fresh PU coating.

If the tent floor starts to soak up moisture and water, the waterproof treatment has worn through. This typically happens after 5-10 years of use, or sooner if the tent has often been packed wet. The repair is not difficult — you apply a fresh PU coating.

Materials

  • Water-based urethane mixture for tents — products such as Gear Aid Tent Sure, McNett Pol Coat, Atsko Sno-Seal Tent Sealer
  • Sponge — an ordinary kitchen sponge or a brush-sponge
  • A dry, clean space — indoors or under cover

Check the product instructions on the bottle — directions can vary.

How to do it

  1. Pitch the tent or lay it out flat in a dry and clean place
  2. Clean the tent floor with a damp cloth. Remove soil, sand and bits of moss
  3. If the old coating is flaking: gently scrape or brush off any loose remnants. Anything that has worn loose MUST be removed — new coating will not adhere to loose remnants
  4. Apply the first coat with the sponge. Spread it evenly across the whole floor area — avoid lumps and pooling
  5. Let it dry for 24 hours in dry weather
  6. Apply the second coat in the same way. Two coats last much longer than one
  7. Let it dry for another 24 hours
  8. Test before your next trip — spray water on it and check whether it beads

How often

For active use: every 3-5 years as preventive maintenance. For light use: when you notice moisture coming through.

Signs that it is time:

  • Water no longer beads on the floor
  • The inside of the tent floor becomes damp even on dry ground
  • Visible wear on the coating

Prevention

To reduce the need for reproofing:

  • A footprint under the tent — protects the floor directly from abrasive ground
  • Dry the tent after every use — never pack it away wet if you can avoid it
  • Wash it rarely, and only with tent cleaner — ordinary detergent damages the PU coating
  • Choose a soft pitch — grass beats stone and coarse sand

Check the tent floor for holes at the same time

While you have the tent laid out and freshly cleaned, it is a good opportunity to check for small holes or tears. Patch them with Patching holes and tears in tent fabric → before you apply a new coating.
