Kubben (finskeprimus)

The kubben is a Coastal Sami or Finnish type of fire that makes itself a stove out of a log. It burns for a 24-hour period, perfect for driftwood or as a heat source.

The kubben is an old Coastal Sami or Finnish type of fire. It is excellent on driftwood you find along the shore, but it can be used on any kind of log.

You set kettles and pots on top of the kubben, and you cook just as easily as on an ordinary stove. The finskeprimus, or simply the kubben, is a first-rate stove and heat source that can burn for about a 24-hour period.

Used for: Cooking and as a heat source.

Requires: A good saw and a completely dry log.

How to make a kubben

  1. Use a log that is preferably 30 centimetres thick, ideally more. Use a length of one to one and a half metres of the log.
  2. Stand the log on end.
  3. Cut a cross into the end — preferably 30 to 50 cm down into the log.
  4. Cut several cuts of equal depth down into the log so that it gradually takes on a star shape.
  5. The easiest way to light it is to pour a little firelighter fluid down into the split and set it alight.
  6. Alternatively, you make a small hollow in the centre of the star-shaped cross and light it there in the usual way.

The heat burns its way down into the log, and you have a stable stove that copes with both pots and managing a pan.
