Tags: Aquatic plant Description: The water lily is an aquatic plant whose leaves and flowers lie floating on the surface. But it has its roots in the bed of the lake. A long, flexible stem then runs from the bed up to the leaves and flowers at the surface. This stem can grow several metres long. In Norway, the most common water-lily species are the yellow water-lily and the white water-lily. The names refer to the colour of the floating flowers. When the flower has finished blooming, the fruits are drawn under water. Here they split open so that the seeds float out. The seeds are filled with air and therefore float to the surface and are dispersed with the water. After a time the air bladders rot, and the seed sinks to the bed and can start a new plant.
