Tufted hair-grass

Tags: Rushes, sedges and grasses Description: A number of different grass species grow in pasture, hay and managed meadows. One of the most distinctive is tufted hair-grass. Tufted hair-grass is a large grass that grows in tussocks and can reach over 1 m tall. It takes its name from the silvery head, which hangs and sways gently in the wind. Use: The leaves are ribbed and very rough on the upper side. It is also called cutting-grass because it cuts the tongues of grazing animals. For this reason there is little grazing on this grass. The grass is important for many small-animal species, since the dense tussocks are a favoured overwintering site. Habitat type: Cultural landscape, Water and bog Edible: No Written by: LĂŠrke Stewart
