Tags: Lichen Description: Iceland moss is a brown to greyish-brown, shrubby lichen that can grow up to 10 cm tall. It belongs to the foliose lichens. Iceland moss is common across large parts of Norway, in open pine and birch woods and in the low mountains. It has small spots on the underside and short, black hairs along the edge. Use: In hard times people have supplemented their diet with Iceland moss, for example baking it into bread. For this reason Iceland moss has also been called brødlav, braudmose and matmose. The lichen must be treated with lye and boiled before being used in bread. A decoction of Iceland moss has also been used for headache, cough, respiratory complaints and stomach problems.
