Gneiss is the most common rock type in Norway; it is metamorphic, which means it has been transformed from another rock. Its hallmarks are banding, layering and a flame-like appearance caused by transformation under high pressure and heat, often from mica schist or granite. The colour varies from grey to pink. The picture shows Askøy gneiss, from Askøy outside Bergen.
