Meths stove

Strongly advised against. The invisible flame, combined with the fire risk when refuelling, has caused serious accidents. Choose a different stove.

Methylated spirits used to be a common fuel, and trekking stoves (stormkjøkken) with a meths burner are still sold. The main problem comes down to two things:

  • Invisible flame — it can be hard to see that the stove is burning, especially when there is little methylated spirits left.
  • Fire risk when refuelling — if you top up the methylated spirits while the stove is still burning, a large flame can flare up. The risk of burn injuries is high.

In addition, methylated spirits does not burn entirely cleanly, but produces a fair amount of soot.

Choose gas or petrol/multifuel instead.
