The red squirrel is Norway’s most popular rodent, and is usually a welcome guest at the bird table. Red squirrels are very good acrobats, spending their lives for the most part in the trees. This is also where they have their dreys, which can resemble magpie nests. In the drey the squirrel sleeps and has its young. The young are usually born in late winter. In good years the mother squirrel can have an extra litter of young during the summer.
Red squirrels live mainly on seeds, nuts and shoots. A typical track sign is gnawed cones, where the squirrel has gnawed off all the cone scales to reach the seeds inside.
