Insects are often our least popular, yet utterly essential creatures. There are thousands of species, whether we are talking about ants, flies, wasps or mosquitoes - and they all serve important functions in the ecosystem as pollinators for plants, as prey for a sea of other animals, as scavengers and carrion-eaters - and as decomposers. Insects are easy to recognise by the fact that they have six legs and three body parts.
