Silverweed

Tags: Flowers Description: Silverweed grows on sea beaches, wrack banks and salt meadows along the whole coast, but can also be found inland on roadsides and in farmyards. The roots go fairly deep, and the plant spreads quickly and can therefore form mats. Silverweed has very characteristic leaves made up of many leaflets that sit opposite one another and that all have teeth along the edge. The underside of the leaves is silver-grey, while the upper side is almost always dark green (sometimes also greyish). The stems can be red or green, and the flowers are large, bright yellow with five petals. Use: The roots have formerly been used as fodder, particularly for pigs, and as food for people. They were eaten raw or boiled, and they were said to taste a little like potatoes. Habitat type: Coast Edible: Yes Written by: LĂŠrke Stewart
