When we say woodland grouse we mean capercaillie (that is, the tiur and the røy) and black grouse. Both of these species thrive in woodland, each in its own biotope. The black grouse most of all in denser young mixed forest, and the capercaillie in coarser old forest. Woodland grouse feed a good deal on the ground for various buds, shoots and herbs. The chicks also eat insects and larvae. Both species of woodland grouse have what we call «leik». This is when gatherings of males come together in one place to display and to fight it out. The female black grouse and the female capercaillies keep to the sidelines and turn up to mate with the toughest of the fighting males. Some birds can become so hormonally disturbed during this time that they may even attack passing walkers!
