Cross-curricular topics: public health and life skills
Cross-curricular topics: public health and life skills In sport and society, the cross-curricular topic of public health and life skills is about developing pupils’ understanding of what significance physical activity has for the individual and for society. The subject can help develop pupils’ understanding of good value choices and of the influence of the media, and it can help pupils see the value of a society where we have body ideals with room for human diversity. Taking sport as the starting point, pupils shall gain knowledge about who they are and about how they can manage their own life and their own health.
Democracy and citizenship In sport and society, the cross-curricular topic of democracy and citizenship is about the capacity for critical thinking and the capacity to handle clashes of opinion and respect disagreement. The subject shall develop pupils’ understanding of the topic by encouraging them to reflect on how sport is structured into clubs and organisations at every level. The subject can provide knowledge and understanding of what effect the individual’s engagement can have on developments in one’s own sports club, in sports organisations generally, in the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports in particular, in the Saami sports organisations, and in society more widely.
Sustainable development In sport and society, the cross-curricular topic of sustainable development is about reflecting on the consumption that sport entails across several areas of society, both locally, nationally and globally. Our society depends on dugnad (organised voluntary communal work), and the subject sport and society can give pupils the knowledge and understanding they need to take part in local dugnad-based work that benefits society and is in keeping with the basis of natural resources. The subject can help pupils see the connection between social, economic and environmental conditions and how people’s way of life and use of resources have consequences locally, regionally and globally.
