Cross-curricular topics: health and life skills

Cross-curricular topics: health and life skills In Norwegian, the cross-curricular topic of health and life skills is about developing pupils’ ability to express themselves in writing and speech. This gives pupils a basis for expressing their own feelings, thoughts and experiences, which is important for managing relationships and taking part in a social community. Reading fiction and non-fiction can both affirm and challenge pupils’ self-image, and thereby contribute to their development of identity and life skills.

Democracy and citizenship In Norwegian, the cross-curricular topic of democracy and citizenship is about developing pupils’ oral and written rhetorical skills, so that they can express their own thoughts and opinions and take part in social life and democratic processes. Through critical work with texts and utterances, pupils develop their capacity for critical thinking and learn to handle differences of opinion through reflection, dialogue and discussion. Reading fiction and non-fiction gives pupils an insight into other people’s life situations and challenges. This can help them develop understanding, tolerance and respect for other people’s viewpoints and perspectives, and it can lay the foundation for constructive interaction.

Sustainable development In Norwegian, the cross-curricular topic of sustainable development is about pupils developing knowledge of how texts portray nature, the environment and living conditions, locally and globally. By engaging with the subject’s diversity of texts, reading critically and taking part in dialogue, pupils can develop the ability to understand and handle conflicting opinions and conflicts of interest that can arise when society changes in a more sustainable direction. The subject Norwegian helps to make pupils aware and to equip them to act and influence society through language. VG1: - use various sources in a critical, independent and verifiable manner
