Cross-curricular topics: Public health and life skills
Cross-curricular topics: Public health and life skills In the natural sciences, the cross-curricular topic of public health and life skills is about giving pupils the competence to understand their own body and to look after their own physical and mental health. Pupils should be able to take a critical approach to and use health-related information to make sound and responsible choices regarding health, safety and the environment in both everyday and working life.
Democracy and citizenship In the natural sciences, the cross-curricular topic of democracy and citizenship is about pupils gaining a basis for distinguishing between knowledge that is scientifically based and knowledge that is not based on science. At the same time, the natural sciences should contribute to openness towards the experience-based and traditional knowledge that the Sámi have about nature. Competence in the natural sciences provides a basis for understanding and being critical of the argumentation in public debate, and is important if pupils are to be able to be active citizens and contribute to technological and sustainable development.
Sustainable development In the natural sciences, the cross-curricular topic of sustainable development is about pupils gaining the competence to make environmentally conscious choices and take such actions, and to see these in connection with local and global environmental and climate challenges. Knowledge of the connections in nature is necessary in order to understand how we humans help to influence it. Competence in the natural sciences can help us find solutions to limit the climate challenges, conserve biological diversity and manage the earth’s natural resources in a sustainable way. VG1: - account for the functions of some nutrients and discuss why a varied diet is important from a health and sustainability perspective
- discuss current health and lifestyle questions and assess the reliability of information from different sources
- account for how climate change affects evolution, the distribution of species and biological diversity
- assess and create programs that model phenomena in the natural sciences
