Democracy and citizenship In Maths P, the cross-curricular topic of democracy and citizenship is about giving pupils the opportunity to explore, model and analyse real data sets and numerical material linked to society. VG1: - read, extract and assess mathematics in texts about situations from the local community, make calculations linked to this, and present and argue for the results

  • explore how different premises may affect how mathematical problems from society and working life are solved
  • model situations linked to topics from society and working life, present and argue for the results and for when the models are valid
  • identify variable quantities in different situations and use them for exploration and generalisation
  • interpret and use composite units of measurement in practical contexts and choose a suitable unit of measurement
  • interpret and use functions in mathematical modelling and problem-solving
  • plan, carry out and present independent work linked to modelling and functions within social-science topics
  • use digital tools in exploration and problem-solving linked to the properties of functions, and discuss the solutions VG2: - analyse and present findings in data sets from the local community and the media
  • explore and explain how similarity, scale and the properties of geometric figures can be used in calculations and in practical work
