Biology
Cross-curricular topics: Health and life skills
Cross-curricular topics: Health and life skills In biology, the cross-curricular topic of health and life skills is about gaining knowledge of physical health and the competence to make knowledge-based choices relating to one’s own health. It is also about how diseases and other health challenges in society can be prevented and treated. Furthermore, it is about the opportunities that gene technology and biotechnology can offer for public health. In addition, health and life skills in biology is about the fact that experiences of nature also matter for public health.
Sustainable development In biology, the cross-curricular topic of sustainable development is about how climate change and the use of natural resources affect ecosystems and alter the living conditions of organisms. Furthermore, it is about ethical dilemmas relating to how human activity affects biological diversity, and about how biological competence can contribute to more sustainable management of nature and natural resources. VG2: - plan and carry out investigations, gather, process and interpret data, and present results and findings
- explain how selected regulatory mechanisms govern homeostasis in humans, and investigate how lifestyle can affect these mechanisms
- explore abiotic and biotic factors in an ecosystem, discuss connections that explain biological diversity, and reflect on the intrinsic value of nature
- explore what consequences changes in climate and land use can have for biological diversity, and discuss measures for more sustainable management VG3: - explore a biological research question, analyse collected data, argue for the choice of methods, and discuss results and findings
- explore factors that regulate growth in, and the size of, populations, and discuss conflicts of interest surrounding the management of populations
- discuss how human activity affects the cycles, and explore measures to safeguard them
- explore how evolutionary processes affect the gene pool of populations, and compare different mechanisms for speciation
