For the teacher

All subjects shall contribute to realising the value base for education, including in relation to sustainability. In the core values of the curriculum for friluftsliv it is pointed out that the subject shall contribute to pupils developing respect for nature and an awareness of climate and the environment. On friluftsliv trips, provision shall be made for sustainable travel, and account shall be taken of commercial interests in nature. Pupils shall have basic skills in sustainable friluftsliv, and they shall be inspired to a commitment to caring for nature. It is a competence aim in Friluftsliv 1 that pupils shall ‘practise a friluftsliv that cares for nature’ and in Friluftsliv 2 that pupils shall ‘carry out and reflect on sustainable travel in nature’. Friluftsliv is strongly linked to the cross-disciplinary topic of sustainable development, and in this area the subject shall contribute to pupils developing the ability and the will to care for the environment and to travel in nature in a sustainable way. This article describes some concrete measures for sustainable travel on friluftsliv trips.

Having respect for nature and practising sustainable travel requires both knowledge and attitudes work. The responsible teacher should therefore build in opportunities for reflection both before, during and after trips. The fireside talk is also a suitable occasion for discussing what the group has observed of both sustainable and less sustainable travel and use of nature. During a trip there is an opportunity to give pupils practical exercises linked to this topic. Which human traces are visible in the terrain? How many fire sites did we find? Have these been tidied up? Has others’ activity affected our experience? Other practical exercises are to establish habits of tidying fire sites and always carrying a bag to pick up both one’s own litter and that of others. In friluftsliv one should also reflect on the use of equipment. Training in the maintenance and repair of friluftsliv equipment is also a contribution to a sustainable friluftsliv.
