Cross-curricular topics: health and life skills

Cross-curricular topics: health and life skills In the subject of history, the cross-curricular topic of health and life skills is about giving pupils an understanding that they are shaped by history and that they shape history. This shall help pupils understand, influence and cope with their own lives. Pupils shall see that the past, and how it is portrayed, helps to form how people and societies perceive themselves and others. This matters for the development of a secure identity. Insight into how people have helped to create history gives pupils an understanding that they too can help to shape their own present and future. Such an understanding can help to give meaning to life and motivate good value choices. The subject of history is about how people in the past handled their conditions of life, and pupils shall develop historical empathy. This shall give pupils a basis for developing respect for others and for making responsible choices in life.

Democracy and citizenship In the subject of history, the cross-curricular topic of democracy and citizenship is about giving pupils an understanding of the origin and development of democracy. The subject also gives pupils an understanding of what makes democracies viable. Pupils shall be able to see that democracy has not been and is not a given, but a consequence of choices people have made, are making and will make in the future. Through the subject of history, pupils are trained to see a diversity of perspectives and to understand that people have different priorities, attitudes and values in different contexts. The subject of history thereby helps to make pupils aware of the opportunities they have to be active citizens.

Sustainable development In the subject of history, the cross-curricular topic of sustainable development is about giving pupils an understanding of the interplay between humans and nature. The subject shows how humans have related to nature, managed and used resources. The subject of history also sheds light on how human activity has changed the conditions of life on earth, while humans have also had the ability to solve problems that have arisen. Historical awareness gives pupils an understanding that the consequences of their own choices become other people’s history. They can thereby also become aware of their own opportunities to contribute to a more sustainable society. VG2: - reflect on how the past shapes us as human beings
